If you’re tormented by aching back night after night, you must agree with me that the best investment we can make is one that brings us a good night’s sleep, period.

The rest of our day is defined by how we’ll we sleep, so what could be more important?

You’ve probably tried all kinds of positions, twists and turns and in bed acrobatics, haven’t you? Done some online research, read some interesting reviews of both regular and air mattresses…

So have I and for years I was just zombified, trying not to fall asleep while I go to work. Sounds familiar? That’s why I’m here, to share my experiences with you and tell you what did it for me at last.

Why should you read on?

As I said, I know what you’re going through, and it’s no small matter at that. Back pain, being mild or severe can cause a whole series of problems, as it did for me. It all starts with you being unable to fall asleep due to the pain, and it just keeps on branching from there.

Thank god I solved my problems but it didn’t come easy or quick. I don’t even want to think what would become of me if that old “Be quick or be dead” was really true. I can joke about it now, sure, but back then I didn’t feel like laughing.

I dedicated years to experimenting with different mattresses, reading and writing reviews, contacting other users, so I know what I’m talking about.

So, I’ll sleep a little less, so what?!

Wrong! Lack of sleep can cause an absurd amount of issues, such as, but not limited to: aching muscles, depression, confusion, increased blood pressure, heightened risk of diabetes, obesity, weight loss, hallucinations, seizures… Like that isn’t enough, should I go on? Cause I can.

Could an air mattress be the best solution?

In my book, adequate air mattress will help with the pain immensely, not a single doubt in my mind. That’s what nailed it for me, it’s bound to work for you too.

Now I’m just sharing my own story here and in that light I’ll give you some basic pointers on choosing an air mattress, setting it up, I’ll tell you why it might be a good idea to get one and back it up with some science.

Which one do I choose?

Well, there are some things that apply to all scenario and some specific options based on the area the pain is located in.

Things that every man with back pain should look for in an air mattress:

  • Firstly you definitely want a raised air mattress. Its height should be somewhere between your knees and hips. It doesn’t just make slipping in and out a hell of a lot easier, it also provides better support for your spine and muscles.
  • You want an airbed with built-in air pump and airflow you can control. This eliminates the manual pumping, which can last forever and it’s a strain for your rickety back. Airflow control enables you to adjust the firmness of the bed just as your back ordered it.
  • Lastly, you’ll want an air mattress made of durable material such as PVC. It’s the most comfortable, doesn’t leak air in the middle of the night, and it’s not slippery when you turn. You don’t want to make a wrong turn in your bed that your back can’t handle, do you now?

Now, with that out of the way we can talk about some of more sophisticated options that cause relief in specific areas of your back.

And here they are, just tell me where it hurts:

  • If the tension is located in your neck, shoulders or upper spine you need a mattress with a pillow top. That’s nothing more than an inflated pillow attached to the top of your air mattress. It’s there to support your neck, offering a respite to your upper spine and shoulders.
  • If the pain comes from your rib cage, shoulder blades or middle spine you’ll need a mattress with memory foam layer on top. It will mold to your weight and curve of your spine, giving it even weighted support whole night long.
  • Lastly, hips, tail bone and lower back pain will greatly benefit from a firm air mattress with no memory foam layer on top. When you’re sleeping on a firm mattress, the spine is less likely to sink into it and put more pressure on your lower back. It will keep your spine even and straight throughout the night.

Why is the air mattress better than my regular bed?

People don’t say “like I’m sleeping on air” for nothing, A mattress filled with air has few breaking advantages over your old school coil spring bed or mattress while looking exactly the same.

You know the drill by know, here they come:

  • Most important advantage over regular beds lies, of course, in the air chambers stored inside the mattress. They allow you to inflate it to your desired level with the push of a button. Coil spring mattresses have only one mode of firmness while airbeds have next to infinite possibilities.
  • They alleviate pressure points, enabling good blood circulation. That’s why they’re used in hospitals where this is crucial.
  • They distribute your weight differently than coil or foam mattresses (read) EVENLY. So your muscles don’t have to work overtime during the night.
  • Two-person air mattresses come with dual air chambers so that everyone can adjust their desired level of firmness.
