Therm-A-Rest Trail Lite Review

You realize how important your gear is, at least if you are a true camping enthusiast.

It can make or break a trip. I once nearly lost my life (well, a few fingers at least) in Romania, all because of sleeping that was not good enough for the temperature conditions I found.

I’ve been doing these sleeping equipment reviews and I believe I can help by offering some insider info:

Here’s what you’ll get in this review:

  1. complete specifications of the product
  2. opinions of the actual users, both positive and negative, PROs and CONs
  3. My final insights and resume

As for what the company is saying about the inflatable camping mattress:

Therm-A-Rest Trail Lite

  • Therm-A-Rest Trail Lite is very versatile and it’s self-inflatable
  • It can easily be used for both backpacking, car camping and overnights
  • It is easy to pack due – made of die-cut foam
  • It comes with a complimentary stuff sack
  • Its thermal resistance is 3.4, with its 1.5-inch-depth
  • And there is a limited lifetime warranty included

Now, we all know that companies tend to oversell their products. So I checked what other users have been saying about this very inflatable bed.

PROs:

  • Very comfortable, even when being used for the first time…
  • Holds air great and surprisingly comfortable for such a thin pad…
  • Very well made, you can see the quality of the materials right out of the box…
  • Inflates fast and easy…
  • I hiked the rocky Appalachian trail using this pad, worked just as advertised..
  • Fits in my panniers…
  • Just the right balance between comfort and mobility…
  • In spite of the fact that the surface I used it on my last trip was not ideal, many bumps and small rocks, I honestly swear I couldn’t feel any of that. I get irritated when I think about how I struggled for years with my cheapo pad…
  • Just the right size for my lightweight tent, very accurate dimensions…
  • I enjoy the color…
  • This one of the two different sleeping pads I bought ad when I started using this one, I completely forgot the other one, just got another of these for my wife…
  • I was reluctant to get it because of how thin it and how small it packs. It surprised me how comfortable this pad is…
  • Super light…
  • Great value for money…
  • Seems pretty durable so far…
  • Easy to use…
  • The best way to explain how amazed I am with this pad is to compare my two latest trip to the Ozarks. Both times temperature low 30s and the first time with my oldie pad, I really suffered. The last time, I swear, felt no cold at all. And there was nothing different between these trips but this pad. It’s like sleeping on a heated blanket.
  • It can fit into a 212 Kayak…
  • Easy for stowing…
  • It can be rolled up quite small to bring backpacking…
  • Fits inside a sleeping bag perfectly…
  • Vivid and enjoyable colors…
  • Well-made…

Therm-A-Rest Trail Lite review

CONs of this inflatable mattress:

  • For some users, It didn’t completely self-inflate and some of the report they had to add some air to it…
  • It might be thin for those who enjoy a thicker and more robust inflatables…
  • They send me a defective pad but they replaced it with a working one in a timely manner…

My resume:

My final verdict is that this is one of the best camping products out there. With my years of experience, I know when I’ve stumbled upon a good thing.

First let’s see what are the main things you look for in a camping pad:

  • good insulation – check
  • holds air well – check
  • packs light and small – check

Then you come to the dreaded part – the price, and with this one and the level of quality it provides, that part is just a positive surprise.

Believe me, I know the materials used in these things, I know which company outsources and where (I even had legal issues with that last year because I was announcing it) and I know a bargain when I see one. And I am seeing one in this inflatable.

It’s easy to use and as comfortable as an outdoors mattress can get. There are more robust ones and you might think that they will provide better support, but you would be wrong. It’s all about the chamber design and weight distribution.

You can carry it everywhere, and you won’t feel it. It’s light, like really LITE.

This is an A level product and I recommend it to anyone who considers himself a savvy buyer.
